How to Poultice a Hoof

Hoof abscesses are more common during the winter months.  To treat an abscess you will need to apply a poultice, which can be tricky.

Vets have a saying that ‘all lameness is due to puss the foot unless proven otherwise!’ Lameness is often sudden and severe with the horse being reluctant to put weight on the foot. There could also be swelling of the affected leg and an increased digital pulse and heat in the foot.

To poultice a hoof you will need;

  • Licenced poultice such as Animalintex®
  • Some form of padding such as Veterinary Gamgee
  • Cohesive bandages such as EquiWrap
  • Hoof pick
  • Hygienic sponge
  • Bucket to clean the hoof prior to poulticing
  • Roll of duct tape

Check out this video from @Robinson Animal Healthcare on ‘How to Poultice a Hoof,’ for a quick and easy guide.

When treating an abscess, the poultice should be changed every eight hours for the first 48 hours.
