The Mare and Foal Sanctuary is making final preparations for its biggest event of the year – its annual Open Day.

Taking place on Sunday, August 2nd at the Sanctuary’s Visitor Centre, Coombe Park near Totnes TQ9 6LW, there are dozens of exciting events, trade stands and displays in the pipeline – and even an afternoon appearance from patron, John Nettles.

Following on from last year’s successful Open Day, which marked 100 years since the start of World War 1 and the role horses played within the conflict, the Sanctuary team have been discussing ideas on how to make the event as memorable as its predecessor.

And they have come up with some exciting ridden and agility displays, including some crowd-pleasing favourites.

Visitor Centre Manager Tracy Gray said: “Our annual Open Day gives the public the perfect opportunity to see what we do first-hand and we would love to see as many people as possible come along and enjoy the fun.

“It’ll be great to see our patron John Nettles too, and I know he’d like to meet our supporters.

“Rehearsals are well underway for displays and demonstrations involving our horses and ponies – they’re going to be great and the themes are going to be a surprise!

“We’re really proud of what we achieve here and it’s a great day for us to raise awareness about our work. Our café will be open selling hot and cold drinks and snacks too, and all profits go towards our work rescuing, rehabilitating and rehoming horses in need.

“We’re open from 10am-4pm so please come along whatever the weather, we and our horses would love to see you.”
