Following Road Safety Week, A-Plan Shrewsbury continues to raise awareness of road safety for horse and rider with a free hi-vis jacket giveaway. Many riders, from Manchester to Devon, have so far have claimed their free hi-vis jackets, and A-Plan are continuing this offer beyond Road Safety Week, right up until Christmas Day.

Lydia Heywood, rider, and equestrian insurance specialist at A-Plan Insurance says: “As a rider, I always aim to be aware of our surroundings, and visible to oncoming vehicles, the light drops so quickly in the afternoons that so many of us calculate how many minutes of daylight are left before heading off on a hack. There are a wide array of innovative products on the market that illuminate horse and rider in an effort to protect them from danger, like reflective rugs and reflective boots for horses.  

“During the winter months, a hi-vis jacket really is an essential piece of kit, and should be worn all year round, no matter what time of day, season, or weather conditions. Wearing hi-vis definitely gives me extra piece of mind when I hear the whir of an engine approaching from the distance, because I know that we will be seen. It may encourage the driver to slow down a little sooner, which sadly is not always the case. I am proud to be part of a company that prioritise people’s safety over profits.”

With statistics still reflecting that up to two horses are killed on UK roads each week, it’s encouraging to see new police campaigns reminding drivers to be courteous in an effort to reduce the rate of incidents.

Lydia Heywood says, “As riders, I think it’s important to show gratitude to courteous drivers that reduce their speed, also the need to insure is greater than ever before so do check that you have the correct insurance cover, for example, if your horse causes an accident.”
